Sunday, August 20 – Morning hike with dogs

Ah the dog days of summer. I don’t know what that means. I just wanted to write it. If I really thought about the meaning I would guess it means it’s hot and you want to nap a lot. That’s not the weather we’re having.

The dog is happy to hike, but we didn’t go out walking today. We do go through Robinson Woods though on many mornings, and he gets to go on his own hikes with my husband too.

Monday, August 21 – Make relishes and pickles

Today was the solar eclipse – and it was disappointing despite the fact that my husband made us pinhole viewers in boxes. We couldn’t see a thing. Next time (2024 apparently, and it will occur in Northern Maine) I’ll be ready with glasses.

I did not make pickles. I tried making pickles once, years ago, and for some reason they were fizzy. I haven’t tried since even though I am likely fully capable of getting them right this time.

Tuesday, August 22- Schedule dermatologist appointment

If I had spotted this a year ago, or even two months ago, I would have laughed at the idea of scheduling an appointment this way. But let’s just say now I know better, and appointments like this take for effing ever.

Wednesday, August 23 – Water garden

Martha is right, the garden is wilting before my eyes. So I watered it.

Thursday, August 24 – Harvest zucchini and squash

I can’t say that I have much love for zucchini and squash. I’ve tried grilling, and eating them raw, and sauteing, and they just aren’t very interesting. They are however very cute, or can be. This is from the Farmers’ Market:

Friday, August 25- Freeze fresh corn

No corn. But today I went all Martha and made a cherry pie, following her recipe. My husband decorated the crust for our bowling banquet. The pie, and crust, were the best yet. Part of her secret is more corn starch (!) but it didn’t run everywhere. The other part is more butter. Who can argue with that.

I forgot to take a picture after it came out of the oven but it looked great.

Saturday, August 26 – Start canning tomatoes

Pie number 2 for a dinner with friends this eve. This time, I decorated the crust (the image at the top of the post). I’m on a roll now, Martha’s crust is my new go-to.

This week’s tip from Martha: Classic cherry pie with a butter crust
